Shadings

Peter Adriaansz

Shadings, no 50 has been performed in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Amsterdam and Montréal…

Whether prompted by new working quarters — next to a roof terrace, surrounded on one side entirely by glass doors often letting in nearly unbearable amounts of sunlight — or by my habitual fascination for obscuring ‘source’ and ‘reflection’, Shadings seems to deal entirely with an attempt to block out any direct sunlight. In many ways this ‘obscuring’ dictates the piece. Be it in a preference for harmonics over direct pitches, in the form of chords sliding into each other slightly out of focus (pt I), chords immediately sliding away from their source (pt II), or in the form of sounds focusing on their own ‘aftertone’ while moving in and out of rhythmic unison (pt III) — or in the overall relationship of the string quartet to the sinewaves — most of the attention went out to often very subtle gradations in the way sounds or tempo are approached. As in nearly all of my recent works, Shadings is written in sections of exactly uniform length (6 minutes each, give or take a few seconds), which are subsequently filled with different amounts of information. In this way, the first concerns itself with upward motion, the second with downward motion and the third with the approaching of a central point from both sides. All three drop a notch in register.
